Il Fungo of Lacco Ameno: history, how to get there, what to know
The green-tuff sea stack that rises from the water in front of Lacco Ameno is the most photographed natural landmark on Ischia. Its shape looks sculpted — in a sense, it was.

01
The geology
Il Fungo is a monolith of green tuff, the volcanic stone typical of Ischia. It is the remnant of a prehistoric eruption of the Monte Epomeo system. Over millennia the sea has eroded its softer base, giving it the mushroom shape from which the name comes (fungo = mushroom).
02
Why it matters to Lacco Ameno
It sits just a few metres offshore, in front of the small harbour. There is no gate, no ticket: it is simply part of the village's daily landscape. Fishermen pass it every morning; in summer, people swim around it.
03
How to get there
You can see the Fungo from anywhere on Corso Angelo Rizzoli. From Ischia Porto it's a 15-minute drive or taxi; local buses CS and CD reach Lacco Ameno in about 25 minutes. Once in town, the rock is a short walk from any point in the centre.
04
When to photograph it
Best light is early morning (east) and sunset (backlit orange from the west). In summer, after 19:00, the bay turns gold and the Fungo stands out perfectly.
05
Where to eat nearby
The corso in front of the Fungo is home to several of the island's classic seafood restaurants. La Cantina del Mare sits at number 20, a few metres from the rock — the day's catch and volcanic wines from Ischia.
